The final coroner’s report says former Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips strangled himself with a bed sheet in his cell at a California prison this past January. The Omaha World Herald reports the bed sheet was hung from a television shelf and officials found the former Husker with a “do not resuscitate’’ note taped to his chest.
The Kern Valley California prison staff were conducting security checks when they found Phillips unresponsive in his cell.
Phillips had been in an Administrative Segregation Unit on single-cell status since April 11, 2013, after he was suspected of killing his cellmate. He was in the early stages of the trial in Kern County, California for a homicide case.
