Coastal Carolina will make its first appearance in the College World Series this weekend but the Chanticleers have been close before. Coastal Carolina punched its ticket to Omaha by sweeping perennial power LSU in a Super Regional.
“I thought we had the team to do it 2010 but South Carolina took that dream away from us and turned it around and won a national championship”, said Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore. “I know how close we were and it was just not in the cards at that moment in time.”
The Chanticleers were ranked 11th in the final Division one baseball poll and will open on Sunday night against third ranked Florida. Gilmore says the Gators are a team full of high draft picks.
“I was going to see if I could reach out and call the Red Sox or Yankees and see if I could borrow some guys.”
The College World Series opens Saturday afternoon as Oklahoma State takes on UC-Santa Barbara. Miami plays Arizona on Saturday night.
