Arizona plays Coastal Carolina in game one of the best-of-three finals at the College World Series. The Wildcats will be in search of their fifth national title while the Chanticleers are looking to win the crown in their first trip to Omaha.
“This is a long time coming and not a surprise to me”, said Arizona coach Jay Johnson. “I am very proud to say when I look at their team I see a lot of characteristics I see in our team.”
In a post season that has been unkind to national seeds it is only fitting these two teams collide for the title. Both won three straight elimination games to reach the finals.
“There are a lot of talented teams here and possibly teams more talented than Jay’s team and my team”, said Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore. “But I think the two teams that have played the best are here and it should be a great series.”
Coastal Carolina is the first school to reach the championship game in its first trip to the College World Series since Georgia Tech in 1994. The Chanticleers look to become the first team to win it all in their debut since Minnesota in 1956, the 10th year of the event.
