If fireworks seem louder this year you are not imaging things. Omaha Police Bomb Squad Supervisor Sgt. Matt Manhart says powerful homemade fireworks are becoming a big problem.
Sgt. Manhart says, “Most of this stuff that we see is manufactured by individuals here. They get the word out through friends, Facebook, social media and put the information out that they have those things for sale. There is a big demand for them and we see a lot of those things showing up this time of year.”
Sgt. Manhart says if you are found in possession of an illegal or homemade firework that is a felony. He says even if you lit the device off and it went off as expected we can still charge you with possession.
Sgt. Manhart says, “My team is certified in post-blast investigation. We can come in and investigate a scene where one of these devices went off. If we determine that is a homemade device that person can still be charged.”
