Coastal Carolina’s first trip to the College World Series concludes with a national championship. The Chanticleers jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Arizona then held on for a 4-3 victory in the third and deciding game of the title series.
It is the program’s first national crown and it occurred on its final day as a member of the Big South Conference. The school officially joins the Sun Belt Conference today.
“I don’t think our play has been mid-major”, said Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore. “I think that sleeping giant that people told me about 21 years ago has finally awakened.”
Arizona game up short in a bid for a second national title in five years. The Wildcats won game one but could not close it out.
“This is a national championship caliber group that we had”, said Arizona coach Jay Johnson. “We are a very tight group and get through this together but it stings pretty bad right now.”
The Wildcats finish with a record of 49-24.
