Officials with the Army Corps of Engineers report the discovery the zebra mussel, an invasive species which can damage infrastructure and cause the fish population to decline, at Lake Zorinsky in Omaha.
The Corps says a recent water sample take from Lake Zorinsky tested positive for veligers, the microscopic larval form of zebra mussels.
Corps officials say there is no indication the zebra mussels pose a threat to the dam infrastructure. The Corps has no plans at present to lower the lake or use any chemicals to treat it for zebra mussels. More samples will be taken from the lake.
The Corps did lower the lake in 2010 when an adult mussel was discovered. It seemed to work at the time. No adult mussel has been found at this time.
