Health alerts are in place at Big Indian Creek Lake in Gage County and Swan Creek Lake #5A – also known as Willard Meyer Recreational Area – in Saline County.
The reason is the presence of toxic blue-green algae above the state’s threshold of 20 parts per billion.
A similar alert remains in effect for Iron Horse Trail Lake in Pawnee County. Readings there are now safe, but the alert continues until two consecutive weeks of readings below the threshold.
Signs are posted to advise the public to use caution, and designated swimming beaches are closed during the alert.
Recreational boating and fishing are allowed, but people should avoid full immersion in water.
The areas are still open for camping, picnics, and other outdoor activities.
