An investigation continues into an altercation involving a number of inmates at the Tecumseh state prison.
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services reports an altercation between “multiple inmates” at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution broke out Thursday. A preliminary investigation reveals one inmate used “an improvised weapon.”
Prison officials locked down Living Unit 2 through the weekend as staff interviewed inmates and searched for contraband. No additional weapons were found.
Inmates in Living Unit 2 got to take showers and make phone calls Sunday. They got to get outside this week.
NDCS reports about 40 inmates from Living Unit 2 refused to return to their cells after lunch Monday, demanding to know when the lockdown would end. Though emergency response team members were activated, they weren’t needed because the inmates returned to their cells after talking with corrections staff.
Normal operations will resume at Living Unit 2 Wednesday.
After NDCS completes its investigation, findings will be submitted to the local county attorney.
