Saunders County authorities have identified the pilot who died in a civilian airplane crash Sunday as 27-year-old Capt. Michael Trubilla of Reading, PA.
Trubilla was with the 55th Wing at Offutt Air Force Base.
Trubilla’s instructor, 61-year-old Ron Panting of Papillion, also died in the crash.
According to the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office, the Beechcraft Baron Trubilla was flying fell vertically and crashed in a soybean field in Saunders County Sunday afternoon.
The Beechcraft is a twin-engine aircraft. It belonged to LeMay Flight Training Center at Offutt. It had taken off from the Millard Airport nearly two hours prior to the fatal crash.
The sheriff’s office says a witness stated the plane was flying from the southeast to the northwest and they could hear the engine sputter prior to the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
