Congressman Brad Ashford is hosting his 2nd annual Veterans Jobs Summit in Omaha this afternoon. Ashford says this fair is designed to connect veterans with employers who recognize their valuable assets, leadership skills, security clearances and technology that comes with a military background.
Congressman Ashford says, “What we have found is there is a gap between leaving the military and finding work. Not only have developed military skills and leadership skills but they have been certified to do a number of tasks. What happens is they leave the military and they have to re-certify. That takes a period of time. We are working with the private sector, through our committee – the House Armed Services Committee, and the military to ease that transition so individuals that are certified to do a job in the military leave and walk into a job in the private sector.”
There are 120 companies represented at this job fair ranging from corporations and small business to non-profit, government and educational organizations. Congressmen Ashford says fields range from financial services, insurance, transportation, health care, construction to engineering. They will also hold business seminars, provide health checks, update VA benefits and provide an update on the Omaha National Cemetery.
The Veterans Jobs Summit will be held at the Ramada Inn Convention Center at 72nd and Grover Streets in Omaha from noon until 6 p.m. Tuesday.
