A truck driver has been jailed in Keith County on charges of motor vehicle homicide in a western Nebraska multiple vehicle accident Sunday that killed five people and injured several others.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports 53-year-old Tony Weekly of Baker, Florida was driving west on Interstate 80 about a half hour before noon Sunday when his truck struck the rear of a van in a construction zone about four miles west of Brule in Keith County. The impact pushed the semi and the van into three other cars. Both the semi and the van burst into flames.
Five people in the van died.
Six people were taken to Ogallala Community Hospital. Three of the six were flown to hospitals in Colorado. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
Weekly was taken to Sedgewick County Hospital in Julesburg, Colorado. He was treated and released. Upon release from the hospital, Weekly was arrested.
No names of those killed or injured have been released, pending notification of family.
The Nebraska State Patrol closed 10 miles of I-80 for approximately six hours Sunday afternoon while the crash was being cleaned-up and investigated.
The Keith County Sheriff’s Office, the Ogallala Police Department and Fire and Rescue units from Ogallala, Big Springs, and Brule assisted NSP.
