A 3-run 6th inning proved decisive for Memphis, as the Redbirds defeated Omaha 3-2 on Thursday evening at Autozone Park.
Omaha were the first to score, doing so in the top of the 3rd. Orlando Calixte singled, went to 2nd on a groundout, and scored on a single by Dusty Coleman, putting the Chasers ahead 1-0.
Memphis starter Kurt Heyer worked 4.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits. He struck out 2 and walked none.
The Chasers doubled their lead in the 6th; Hunter Dozier tripled, and Tony Cruz drove him in with a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0.
Christian Binford took a shutout into the bottom of the 6th, when the Redbirds rallied to take the lead. Randal Grichuk doubled, and David Washington followed with a 2-run homer. Binford walked the next batter, Dean Anna, and was removed after 5+ innings. Brooks Pounders entered for Omaha; Anna advanced to 2nd on a deep flyout, and with 2 down, Breyvic Valera delivered an RBI single, giving Memphis a 3-2 lead.
Binford (L, 2-9) was charged with 3 runs, 7 hits, and 3 walks. He struck out 6.
John Brebbia (W, 2-2) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for Memphis, and Miguel Socolovich worked the 7th and 8th.
Brooks Pounders threw a scoreless 7th frame for Omaha, while Malcolm Culver tossed a zero in the 8th to keep Omaha close.
But the Chasers were retired in the 9th by Sam Tuivailala, who earned his 16th save of the season, and ended Omaha’s 4-game road winning streak.
The Chasers continue the series in Memphis tomorrow. Omaha’s starter is to be determined, while RHP Arturo Reyes (7-5, 4.84) will throw for Memphis. First pitch will be at 7:05.
