Thieves are getting smarter when it comes to stealing personal information and some are now using Bluetooth skimming machines on gas pumps so they can download the data from a remote location. Mark Grabow with Buchanan’s PB Service Center in Omaha says they are trying their best to keep one step ahead of the bad guys.
Grabow says, “When it became an issue especially nationwide and when it hit our area here we upgraded our pumps to a more secure lock and that seems to have helped. In some locations we are using the stickers or the seals that you see on a lot of pumps. Once they are moved they change color and that indicates the pump has been tampered with.”
Grabow says unfortunately video surveillance of the business doesn’t help much in catching these thieves. He says these guys are good at what they do and can typically insert a skimmer without anyone really noticing. He says those skimmers can be in place for a long time before the thief comes back to retrieve the data.
The bad guys are also staying one step ahead of technology when it comes to skimming. The new devices are Bluetooth and the thieves can steal credit card information from a remote location.
