Two Florida residents are in custody after a pursuit which began in Kansas ended with their arrest in eastern Nebraska.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports 30-year-old Donnell Johnson of Sunrise, Florida and 22-year-old Brjeth Garcia of Orlando, Florida were arrested Thursday afternoon near Plattsmouth. Both have been jailed in Cass County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol notified the Nebraska State Patrol around mid-afternoon Thursday that a car troopers had been pursuing was heading into Nebraska on Highway 75. Nebraska troopers attempted to stop them in Richardson County, but the car refused to yield and Nebraska troopers picked up the pursuit.
The pursuit last nearly 10 minutes, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph. Troopers broke off the pursuit just south of Auburn. The car kept going north on Highway 75. A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter was joined by a Nebraska State Patrol plane following the car as it neared Nebraska City.
Spike strips flatted the car’s tires and ended the pursuit just south of Plattsmouth on Highway 75.
Both Johnson and Garcia took off on foot. Johnson attempted to get into a number of vehicles on a nearby car lot before being arrested inside the dealership. Garcia ran into a field, but was arrested by troopers.
Johnson is charged with felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, no operator’s license, attempted theft by unlawful taking, and possession of a financial transaction device.
Garcia is charged with accessory to a felony, and possession of a financial transaction device.
The Nebraska State Patrol continues to investigate the incident in conjunction with Kansas authorities.
