The phrase “In God We Trust” will soon be displayed at the Cedar County Courthouse in northeast Nebraska.
County commissioners in Hartington voted unanimously Tuesday to place the words on the wall. Commission chairman Dave McGregor says it makes sense.
McGregor says, “It’s just makes a good feeling to you, in a way, that we can get back to a few things that we all believed in.”
Barb Otto, of Valentine, made a presentation to the commissioners, encouraging them to use the phrase. She has been traveling around the state, talking to county leaders.
McGregor says they will probably start with posting the phrase in the room where they all meet.
“We’re thinking about maybe putting it on the wall of the commission room, something to that effect,” he says.
While similar moves elsewhere have been met with legal challenges, McGregor says their county attorney was consulted and didn’t have a problem with the proposal.
“The county attorney sat right there and to our knowledge, there’s no restriction on that,” McGregor says. “He’s fine with it.”
He says it will be up to the judges who use the courtroom to decide if the phrase will appear there as well.
