When Nebraska hosts Fresno State in the season opener on Saturday the game will feature two teams looking to bounce back from disappointing seasons. The Huskers finished 6-7 in Mike Riley’s first season as head coach while the Bulldogs slumped to 3-9.
Tim DeRuyter enters his fifth season as the head coach at Fresno State.
“We got knocked down a peg last year and it is time to fight back”, said DeRuyter. “When you are young and inexperienced and you have the adversity like we had last year sometimes you don’t handle it well and as the head coach I did not do a good job of handling it.”
DeRuyter named redshirt freshman Chason Virgil as the starting quarterback for Saturday’s game. Virgil played in three games in 2015 before suffering a season ending should injury in a week three loss to Utah.
To have any chance against the Huskers the Fresno State defense must be better than the one that gave up 38 points and 234 yards of rushing per game last season.
“They are anticipating having a great year and you have got to go into one of the storied locations in college football. It will be a great environment for our kids and a chance to go compete against the best.”
Nebraska coach Mike Riley announced on Saturday that four players have been elected captains by their teammates: Jordan Westerkamp, Dylan Utter, Josh Banderas and Nate Gerry. All four are seniors.
