Chadron State faces a ranked team in its first road test of the season on Saturday with a visit to Colorado Mesa. The Eagles used a strong defensive effort and took advantage of turnovers to open the season with a 17-10 win over Fort Lewis College.
” We had five takeaways”, said Chadron State coach Jay Long. “Three were forced fumbles, two were interceptions and we also scored on special teams. Both of those things were positives last Saturday.”
Colorado Mesa opened with a 34-14 win over Western State and is ranked 25th in the latest NCAA Division II poll. Long says the Mavericks also have a strong defense and the Eagles will need to limit mistakes and play well on special teams.
“Last year that is how we got beat was in special teams”, added Long. “We dropped a kickoff return and they scored off of it. It is going to be one of those games where we have to be solid in all three phases.”
Last year Colorado Mesa beat the Eagles 23-13 in Chadron.
