A four-year veteran of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office has been placed on administrative leave after shooting and killing a Louisville resident during a traffic stop.
The Nebraska State Patrol and the Cass County Attorney’s Office reports 25-year-old Deputy Tyler Reiff fatally wounded 23-year-old Austin Baier shortly after 7 o’clock Wednesday evening.
Authorities say Reiff pulled Baier’s car over near 1st and Cherry Streets, near the Louisville High School. The car matched the description of one reported to have been driven recklessly in the Louisville area.
Baier initially stopped, then drove off. He stopped a second time. Baier got out of his car and confronted Reiff. The confrontation escalated to an altercation, according to NSP and the attorney’s office. Reiff fired shots from his service weapon.
Medical personnel arrived at the scene and attempted life-saving measures along with Reiff, but Baier was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reiff was not injured.
A grand jury will be empaneled to investigate the fatal shooting. Nebraska law requires a grand jury investigate whenever someone dies while in custody or in the process of arrest.
