Three Husker players chose to kneel during the National Anthem at last Saturday’s game against Northwestern. Senior linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey yesterday spoke at a news conference saying the three Huskers joined other professional and amateur athletes who are protesting racial injustice.
There have been questions whether sanctions can be taken against the players because they attend a public university. Creighton University Law Professor Patrick Borchers says Coach Mike Riley could have the largest impact on the players.
Borchers says, “The guy who would make the most impact on it would be Riley if he would talk to them and say look, you are making the team look bad and the state look bad and the rest of it. He could factor into maybe their leadership potential and whether they are team guys and things like that but that is probably as far as it goes.”
Borchers adds any official action would be counter-productive, lawyers lining up. Realistically, probably the best solution would be to ignore it and it will go away.
Coach Riley had stated this was choice they made for personal reasons. Governor Pete Ricketts called the actions disrespectful and disgraceful.
