Whiteclay and parts of Sheridan County will have better access to cell and broadband service.
Viaero Wireless is boosting its coverage there, which will extend 15 miles into the Pine Ridge Indiana Reservation in South Dakota.
St. Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks says extending coverage into Pine Ridge will bring them new opportunities.
“Lakota College can connect with Chadron State (College), Western Community College,” Pansing Brooks tells Nebraska Radio Network, “if we can get something connected either with UNMC, those students will be able to connect back by telehealth.”
Pansing Brooks says she noticed the lack of cell reception earlier this year while visiting Whiteclay.
“The people of Whiteclay are living in isolation,” she says. “That is not helping the devastating situation that is going on up there.”
Viaero Wireless put up the new cell tower without any government funding.
“We just think it’s really an amazing opportunity and very kind of Viaero to work with us and to place this tower, which is really helping vulnerable people, both in Nebraska and across our border.”
Pansing Brooks says she worked with Viaero and the Public Service Commission to add coverage for Whiteclay.
