The USDA has classified the drought in Kearney County severe enough to warrant a “primary natural disaster area” designation.
The classification means qualified farmers there are eligible for low interest emergency loans from USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), if eligibility requirements are met.
The benefit extends to the contiguous counties of Adams, Buffalo, Franklin, Harlan, Phelps, and Webster.
Farmers in the seven counties have eight months from the declaration date (Sept. 29) to apply for loans.
The financial assistance is designed to cover part of their losses.
FSA will take into account the extent of losses, security available, and repayment ability.
