Temperatures will drop into the upper 20’s to lower 30’s tonight in eastern Nebraska and the first freeze warning has been issued for the season. University of Nebraska – Lincoln Extension Educator for Douglas and Sarpy County John Fech says you could lose some of your outdoor plants unless you take precaution.
Fech says there are some garden plants that are worth saving. He says, “We need to trap in some ground heat. The air temperature will be freezing but not the ground temperature. It won’t be a deep frost in the low 20’s so that can best be done with bed sheets or Styrofoam sheeting. That works pretty well to trap in the heat.” Fech says the covering should not touch the plants so building a temporary trellis to drape the sheeting over is a good idea.
Fech says it is also important to water the plant well. That provides insulation for the root system. He says if the roots or dry you will have more damage from a freeze or cold temperature than if the roots have been moistened.
