Life support is being removed from a state prisoner found unresponsive in his cell this past weekend.
The Department of Correctional Services reports the Johnson County coroner informed officials at the Tecumseh state prison that Bryan West Hospital medical staff would begin the process to remove Terry Berry from life support.
Staff at Tecumseh discovered Berry unresponsive in his cell Saturday evening, shortly before 8 o’clock. Berry’s cellmate alerted guards to his condition. Staff began resuscitation efforts immediately. Berry was taken first to the Johnson County Hospital, then to Bryan West in Lincoln.
The date of death will be listed as Monday, when doctors declared Berry legally brain dead.
Berry’s family made the decision to remove life support.
Corrections officials say the Nebraska State Patrol is conducting a criminal investigation into Berry’s death. No further details are being released.
