A Tecumseh state prison inmate has been charged with murder in the death of his cellmate.
The Nebraska Attorney General’s office has filed charges against 39-year-old Patrick Schroeder, the cellmate of 22-year-old Terry Berry, found unresponsive in his cell Saturday night.
The AG office says an investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol accuses Schroeder of strangling Berry with a towel. The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services assisted in the investigation.
Guards at Tecumseh found Berry unresponsive in his cell. Crews transported Berry to Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln where he was placed on life support. Berry was pronounced dead later.
An autopsy conducted in Omaha found the cause of death to be asphyxia due to compression of the neck structures. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Johnson County Attorney Rick Smith will prosecute the case with assistance from the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.
