Tens of thousands celebrate Cinco de Mayo

One of the largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the state is in south Omaha. Marcos Mora is coordinator for the event and he says thousands come from near and far to celebrate the annual May 5th festival. He says 55,000 people attended last year and they expect more to visit the city this year.

Mora says because of growing popularity they decided to expand the festival and added a health fair to his year’s event. Mora says the festival is a five day event that features live entertainment, food, carnival rides, a health fair and the highlight is the parade on Saturday at 10am. All of the activities take place along South 24th Street in Omaha.

BBB warns of email scam

A warning to Verizon customers… a fake email is making the rounds that tell customers they owe a very large bill and need to click on a link for details. Nebraska Better Business Bureau President Jim Hegarty says even though the alert is nearly identical to what Verizon really uses, it is a fake.

He says other companies are included in this scam including the Better Business Bureau, LinkedIn and U-S Air to name a few. He says this phishing scam is coming out of the Ukraine and it is primarily designed to load malware into business computers that looks for bank credentials. It then sets up fictitious vendors and starts pulling money from your bank account.

Hegarty says they are sending these emails out by the hundreds of thousands so to play it safe it is a good idea to call the business in question to ask if they are trying to correspond with you.

Hegarty says you can spot a fake email by hovering over the links and checking whether the URL leads to the company’s website. If it is a scam it leads to a third party site. If you receive a suspicious email, delete it and do not click on any links.

Frontier ending daily flights from Omaha to Milwaukee

Omaha will lose it’s only direct flight to Milwaukee soon. Chris Martin is the Director of Operations at Eppley Airfield in Omaha and says Frontier now has two daily non-stop flights into Milwaukee and both will end on June 1st.

Frontier made a decision to stop using smaller commuter planes across the country because of the high price of jet fuel. Martin says the stopped using their 50-seat aircrat not only in Omaha but in Columbus, Indianapolis, Nashville and Pittsburg as well.

Those needing to fly east out of Eppley do have other choices. There are carriers that fly between Omaha and Chicago and then eastward. They also connect through Detroit. Martin says Frontier also offers two daily non-stop flights to Washington D.C.

UNL receives grant to help create new agricultural policy structures

The University of Nebraska – Lincoln received a two-year grant totaling more than $766,000 from the U-S Department of Agriculture to establish a new policy research group within the Center for Agricultural and Food Industrial Organization. UNL agricultural economics professor Dr. Konstantinos Giannakas will lead this research project that takes a close look at all consumers and producers and analyze each and use that data to establish more accurate and effective policies.

Dr. Giannakas stated “This will allow us to determine the affects of different policies on different consumer and producer groups.”

Dr. Giannakas says there are many different types of consumers and producers and the ag policies in place now do not take individual preferences, income, and other factors into consideration. He stated, “rarely are we able to go and say this is going to happen to the low income consumers or with consumers with aversions or say strong preference to organic food or producers that less efficient, smaller producers so this framework that our group will be developing will allow us to take up agricultural policies and determine exactly the market and welfare effect, how different groups will be affected by those policies.”

Once developed, this new framework will be used to analyze important policy issues, including market potential and best regulatory response to food nanotechnology to policies relating to downstream water pollution issues, least-cost policies, rural economic development and much more.
