Omaha basketball star Boozer dead at 75

Bob Boozer, an Omaha native and college basketball star at Kansas State, an Olympic gold medalist and an 11-year pro, died Saturday afternoon of a brain aneurysm as the age of 75. According to his wife of 46 years, Ella, he became ill Friday evening.

Boozer was the No. 1 pick in the 1959 NBA draft after he earned All-America honors at Kansas State. Boozer played on the dominating 1960 Olympic team and played 11 years after that in the NBA where he retired after winning the 1971 NBA title with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Born and raised in Omaha, Boozer became one of the greatest players at Kansas State where he averaged 21.9 points per game. His 25.2 points a game his senior second is only behind Michael Beasley’s 26.2 points in 2007-08. Boozer led the Wildcats to the NCAA Final Four as a junior, and as a senior he helped K-State to a No. 1 ranking in the final regular-season poll.

Storm Chaser split DH with Tacoma

The Omaha Storm Chasers and the Tacoma Rainiers split Sunday’s doubleheader at Werner Park. Omaha took game one erasing a four-run deficit to win 8-5. The Rainiers came back in game two by holding Omaha to just three hits en-route to a 4-0 win.

Vin Mazzaro (2-0) started for the Chasers (27-17) in game one and picked up the victory after allowing five runs in 5.1 innings of work. Brandon Sisk earned the save after shutting out the Rainiers (17-26) in his 1.2 innings pitched. Clint Robinson had three RBI. Omaha trailed Tacoma 4-0 heading into the fourth, but put up six runs to take the lead.

Sean O’Sullivan (3-3) started for Omaha in game two and was hit with a loss after allowing four runs in his 5.2 innings. The Storm Chasers only hits in game two came from Derrick Robinson, Clint Robinson and Max Ramirez.

Huskers secure 4th seed in Big Ten baseball tournament

The Nebraska baseball team (34-21, 14-10 Big Ten) secured the No. 4 seed at next week’s Big Ten Tournament with a 7-3 win over the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday afternoon at Wilpon Complex. The Huskers will face the Michigan State Spartans, who also won on Saturday, but finished the year one-game behind Nebraska in the conference standing.

The Huskers are scheduled to head to Columbus, Ohio, Sunday to start preparation for the 2012 Big Ten Baseball Tournament, which opens on Wednesday, May 23, at Huntington Park. Every game of the tournament will be shown live on the Big Ten Network and Nebraska will open play at 11:05 a.m. (CT) on Wednesday against the Spartans, and the Huskers will be the home team in the game.

Huskers fall short

After scoring 15 runs in last night’s series opener, the Nebraska baseball team (32-21, 13-10 Big Ten) was held to just five runs in a 6-5 loss to the Michigan Wolverines. Josh Scheffert and Cory Burleson each had two hits for the Huskers, while Pat Kelly hit his eighth home run of the year in the fourth inning.

The Huskers are now two games back of both the Indiana Hoosiers and Penn State Nittany Lions with one game to play, which means the highest NU can finish in the Big Ten standings is fourth. [Read more...]

Stormchasers rally past Rainers

Starter Jake Odorizzi made a solid first impression in his Triple-A debut as the 22 year old hurled 6.2 innings of nine hit, three-run ball, en-route to a no-decision. What was decisive was the patented, exciting, Werner Park come-from-behind 5-4 victory to propel their home record to 16-2 and their overall record to 26-16.

Outfielder Wil Myers also had a solid game for Omaha as he collected three hits in four at-bats while knocking in and scoring a run. Jeremy Jeffress (3-2) secured the win after an inning of relief while Francisley Bueno notched his third save of the year after getting the game’s final out. [Read more...]
