The La Nina weather pattern this winter is providing extremely mild temperatures. Bryce Anderson is the Senior Agriculture Meteorologist for Data Transmission’s Network and has been keeping close tabs on the weather situation. He says the arctic air is staying well north of the Midwest region.

Anderson says a negative arctic oscillation is currently seen in the Atlantic and that has allowed the Polar jet stream to remain in northern Canada. That means we have no cold air coming into the region.

Anderson says even though we are enjoying the mild weather now there will likely be a trade-off. He says the lack of moisture now indicates the possibility of a drought and we could be shaping up for a very stormy spring season. Anderson says we have had circumstances where La Nina can be a storm producer and contribute to severe weather greater than average. He says as we get into March and April we could see above average severe storms.

Another problem Anderson points out is there are signs of drought in eastern Nebraska into northwestern Iowa. Soil moisture levels are low right now and that could cause problems when farmers near the planting season. That could also create landscape problems and watering may need to start earlier.

Since September a rogue cow had been seen roaming the outskirts of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and in rural areas. The cow had a calf that was quickly caught but the mother didn’t want to surrender easily. Area cattle producers even tried to use the calf as “bait” to lure the cow into a confinement. While it worked the cow wasn’t happy and broke through the confinement and was once again on the loose. In the last three weeks the cow was starting to come into the city.

A local vet suggested they contact a cattle wrangler to corral the critter and his efforts worked. On Tuesday afternoon the Ninja Cow was caught.

It is suspected the cow escaped from a livestock truck in Bellevue, Nebraska last September. Another cow escaped at the same time but was quickly caught.

The three mile stretch of I-680 from the Mormon Bridge to I-29 north of Council Bluffs was completely destroyed by the Missouri River flood. Iowa Department of Transportation spokesperson Dena Gray-Fisher says this stretch of interstate was put on a fast track for repairs and it will reopen to traffic on Wednesday at 2:00 pm.

That is nearly two months ahead of schedule.

Gray-Fisher says both directions will be open and drivers can exit and enter I-680 from I-29. She says the on and off ramps to exit 1 remain closed as there is still repairs to be made.

Construction crews worked around the clock for many days and then scaled back slightly to 18 hours to get the job done ahead of schedule. Iowa D-O-T reports the only flood damaged roads that remain closed is Iowa Highway 175 from Onawa to Decatur, Nebraska and a small section of Highway 333 into Hamburg.

Iowa D-O-T has a time lapsed video of the rebuilding of I-680 on their website:

They did it! It was relatively anti-climatic, but the Omaha Storm Chasers have clinched their division and guaranteed their first playoff birth since 1999 by pounding their first round playoff opponent Round Rock 12-2.

Then they had to wait for Memphis to finish their game with Albuquerque before popping the champagne. The Isotopes lead 2-0 most of the way, but Memphis tied it in the bottom of the 8th, forcing extras, before falling 3-2 in eleven innings.

The team was following the game online shouting how many outs were left the whole time.

Josh Odson’s report from inside the clubhouse (1:00)

PCL Pitcher of the Year winner, Luis Mendoza, had a shaky start allowing two runs before recording an out, but he settled in, picking up another W. Lorenzo Cain went 5-5, and Jarrod Dyson hit a homner.

There was no power in Omaha’s lineup today. Clint Robinson and Kila Ka’ihue sat out with injuries. Kila will be out a few days, Clint could be more. Fingers are crossed he’s ready for the playoffs.

Nebraska seniors Madeleine Sheils and Kayla Knopik closed the opening round of the Hooters Team Championship presented by the National Golf Coaches Association in a tie for 23rd in Dahlonega, Ga., on Tuesday.

Sheils (Boise, Idaho) and Knopik (Papillion, Neb.) produced a four-over-par 76 in Tuesday’s alternate-shot format in the three-day event. The Husker duo sits eight strokes back of Kentucky’s tandem of Liz Breed and Heather Lott and Michigan State’s Caroline Powers and Lindsey Solberg. The Wildcats and Spartans each teamed up to shoot four-under-par 68s on Tuesday.

Sheils and Knopik are competing in a 55-team field on the 6,155-yard, par-72 layout of Achasta, by Reynolds. The preseason, non-collegiate tournament continues on Wednesday with a shift to a best-ball format. The 54-hole event concludes with an aggregate score round on Thursday.
