Storm Chasers clinch division title (AUDIO)

They did it! It was relatively anti-climatic, but the Omaha Storm Chasers have clinched their division and guaranteed their first playoff birth since 1999 by pounding their first round playoff opponent Round Rock 12-2.

Then they had to wait for Memphis to finish their game with Albuquerque before popping the champagne. The Isotopes lead 2-0 most of the way, but Memphis tied it in the bottom of the 8th, forcing extras, before falling 3-2 in eleven innings.

The team was following the game online shouting how many outs were left the whole time.

Josh Odson’s report from inside the clubhouse (1:00)

PCL Pitcher of the Year winner, Luis Mendoza, had a shaky start allowing two runs before recording an out, but he settled in, picking up another W. Lorenzo Cain went 5-5, and Jarrod Dyson hit a homner.

There was no power in Omaha’s lineup today. Clint Robinson and Kila Ka’ihue sat out with injuries. Kila will be out a few days, Clint could be more. Fingers are crossed he’s ready for the playoffs.

Sheils, Knopik in middle of the pack after first round of collegiate golf tourney

Nebraska seniors Madeleine Sheils and Kayla Knopik closed the opening round of the Hooters Team Championship presented by the National Golf Coaches Association in a tie for 23rd in Dahlonega, Ga., on Tuesday.

Sheils (Boise, Idaho) and Knopik (Papillion, Neb.) produced a four-over-par 76 in Tuesday’s alternate-shot format in the three-day event. The Wildcats and Spartans each teamed up to shoot four-under-par 68s on Tuesday.

Sheils and Knopik are competing in a 55-team field on the 6,155-yard, par-72 layout of Achasta, by Reynolds. The preseason, non-collegiate tournament continues on Wednesday with a shift to a best-ball format. The 54-hole event concludes with an aggregate score round on Thursday.

Record flooding eluded time-honored Farmer’s Almanac

As massive flooding plagues Nebraska, even an old reliable source didn’t foresee how severe things would become.

Sandi Duncan, Managing Editor of Farmers’ Almanac, says the 2011 edition predicted storms in the spring around the state but “didn’t quite call the flooding that took place.”

Duncan says the Almanac predicts it will be a pleasant summer with average rainfall. [Read more...]

State Senator announces run for U.S. Senate

State Senator Deb Fischer announced yesterday she is seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. Fischer says she represents Nebraska values.

‘We value say what we mean, and meaning what we say. We value hard work, common sense and conservative values. That’s what you can expect from me in Washington”. Senator Fischer says.

Fischer’s entrance brings the Republican field to five trying to unseat Democratic Senator Ben Nelson.

The other Republican candidates include Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, state Treasurer Don Stenberg, Schuyler investment adviser Pat Flynn and Omaha truck driver Spencer Zimmerman.
