State Senator announces run for U.S. Senate

State Senator Deb Fischer announced yesterday she is seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. Fischer says she represents Nebraska values.

‘We value say what we mean, and meaning what we say. We value hard work, common sense and conservative values. That’s what you can expect from me in Washington”. Senator Fischer says.

Fischer’s entrance brings the Republican field to five trying to unseat Democratic Senator Ben Nelson.

The other Republican candidates include Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, state Treasurer Don Stenberg, Schuyler investment adviser Pat Flynn and Omaha truck driver Spencer Zimmerman.

Senator Johanns wants withdraw from Afghanistan done responsibly

Nebraska U.S. Senator Mike Johanns says he is not second guessing the President’s decision to bring the troops home from Afghanistan.

But Johanns says he wants it done in a responsible way.

The Senator says if this is all about buying an additional 3-6 months, after investing a decade of lives and money, the country is heading in a wrong direction.

Senator Johanns says it’s too early for him to reach that decision. He believes the key players are the military.

Senator Johanns adds he is concerned that General Pataeas reportedly advised a slower withdrawal rate.

National Guard ready for flood emergency duty

With significant flooding concerns in the state, the Nebraska National Guard is assisting in a variety of situations.

Adjutant General Judd Lyons tells us that soldiers are already involved in several precautionary activities. Lyons says they currently have 26 soldiers and two Black Hawk helicopters out in the North Platte area. They’ve been joined by another Black Hawk from Colorado.

General Lyons says what the soldiers are doing is working aerial sandbag operations on a levy that breached just to the west of the city of North Platte along Highway 30.

General Lyons says the concern there is highway 30 and the Union Pacific Railroad line. He says they also have critical assessment teams working closely with the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and Fema in accessing critical infrastructure at various locations in the state.

Two Sizeable Weekend Drug Busts

A fender bender involving a semi-truck and a pickup on an Interstate 80 on-ramp had brought an arrest and a marijuana seizure. Saturday night about 5 o’clock, state troopers were called to a wreck on the eastbound onramp at Paxton where the semi and pickup collided. The trooper was given consent to search the pickup and found more than 58 pounds of pot in an external fuel tank in the truck’s bed. The driver, a 57 year old from New Hampshire, was arrested on drug charges and jailed in Keith County. Also Saturday, a trooper pulled over a pickup on I-80 near Kearney for non-working brake lights. A drug dog detected contraband and a search turned up more than seven pounds of marijuana, three pot plants and quantities of hashish and meth. The driver, a 36 year old Oregon woman, was arrested and jailed in Buffalo County.

Bluejays going to the CBI

Creighton basketball has accepted a bid into the College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen, and will play an opponent to be determined on Tuesday night (tip-off time TBA) at Qwest Center Omaha. This is Creighton’s 14th straight postseason bid, extending a Missouri Valley Conference record.

Creighton (19-14) finished fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 10-8 league record, then advanced to the semifinals of the State Farm MVC Tournament last week. The Bluejays are led in scoring and rebounding by forward Doug McDermott (14.2 ppg., 7.6 rpg.), who was named MVC Freshman of the Year and MVC Newcomer of the Year. McDermott was named first-team all-MVC, while Antoine Young was named second-team all-Valley after averaging 13.4 points and a league-high 4.6 assists per game. The Bluejays are coached by Greg McDermott, who is in his first season with the program.

This is Creighton’s first appearance in the CBI, which is now in its fourth year. The CBI presented by Zebra Pen is a single-elimination tournament up until the Championship Series, with all games played at campus sites. The Championship Series is a best-of-three series. The event features eight first-round games, four quarterfinal round games, a semifinal round, and then the Championship Series.

The goal of the brackets is to create a competitive balance within each bracket and to minimize missed class time. The final process takes place after the NCAA Tournament field is announced.

The 16-team field consists of teams not selected for the NCAA Tournament. Teams are invited based upon performance during their conference and non-conference schedules, as well as how well the team is playing at the end of the regular season.
