Bellevue sweeps Midland honors

Bellevue University pitcher and third baseman Amanda Neumann was named the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week and Anthony Bazant was named the conference’s baseball Player of the Week.

Neumann went 3-1 with one shut out and 28 strikeouts, without allowing an earned run or walk in 19 innings. She also batted .474 (9-for-19) with six runs, one double, two home runs and four RBIs.

Bellevue University outfielder Anthony Bazant won for the second consecutive week and third time this season as he batted .706 (12-for-17) with five runs, two triples, seven RBIs and four stolen bases.

Doane takes advantage of Bellevue miscues for win

Doane College scored five runs in the final two innings and capitalized on three Bruin errors in the ninth inning to defeat the Bellevue University baseball team 6-4 in non-conference action at Westgate Field. With the win, the Tigers improved to 21-8 overall while the Bruins fell to 14-15 this season.

The Bruins opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-run RBI single up the middle by Juan Rodriguez that scored Jeremy Camacho and Spencer Duggan.

DC got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning on a RBI single to center field by Austin Tharp that allowed Anthony Hincy to cross plate to cut the Bruins’ lead in half, 2-1.

Bellevue answered back with a run in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI single to left field by pinch hitter Brandon Thompson, scoring Camacho.

The Bruins added their fourth run of the game on a sacrfice bunt by Tylor Pavel that allowed Bazant to score who opened the inning with a triple.

DC scored two runs with a pair of RBI singles off BU reliever Alejandro Partidas in the eighth inning and scored three runs on three hits, two walks and three errors to edge Bellevue, 6-4.

Bruins’ starting pitcher Sean McManus allowed one unearned run on two hits and two walks in 6.2 innings of work with three strikeouts in the no decision. Myles Arehart (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in relief and Tigers’ closer Mitch VandenBerge pitched a hitless ninth inning for his sixth save of the year. Jake Aylward (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing three runs in 1.1 innings.

Bellevue men get ready for NAIA nat’l tourney

The Bellevue University men’s basketball team earned the No. 4 seed in the 2011 NAIA Men’s Basketball Division II National Championship, which will be held on Mar. 9-15 in Point Lookout, Mo. on the campus of College of the Ozarks.

The Bruins (27-5), who earned an automatic berth into the tournament after winning the MCAC Tournament last Saturday, will face Ashford (Iowa) University in the first round at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9.

Bellevue will be making its 12th overall and ninth-straight appearance in the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship. The Bruins finished second in 2004 and 2008.

Head coach Shane Paben, who is in his third season at Bellevue, has guided the Bruins to three-straight NAIA National Tournament appearances. The Bruins reached the semifinals in 2010 and the quarterfinals in 2009 in Paben’s first season.

In addition to the 2011 MCAC Tournament title, the Bruins were the MCAC co-regular season champions with Oklahoma Wesleyan, finishing with a 12-2 league record.

Bellevue picked as a four seed in NAIA nat’l tourney

The Bellevue University men’s basketball team earned the No. 4 seed in the 2011 NAIA Men’s Basketball Division II National Championship, which will be held on Mar. 9-15 in Point Lookout, Mo. on the campus of College of the Ozarks.

The 6th ranked Bellevue University men’s basketball team won 77-69 over College of the Ozarks in the championship game of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Bruins (27-5) claimed their second straight MCAC Tournament title with the win and earned the league’s automatic berth into the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship.

The selections and pairings for the 2011 Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship will be announced on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. Bellevue qualified for its ninth straight and 12th overall appearance in the national tournament.
