UNK wrestling picked RMAC favorite

The Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team has been picked first in the 2011 RMAC preseason coaches poll. The poll, and preseason team, is voted upon by the 11 head coaches in the league. Coaches cannot vote for their own team or wrestlers.

UNK, the defending champions, tallied 14 points and six of the 11 first place votes. Grand Canyon (Ariz.) is at 16 points and four first place nods with Adams State a distant third (35 points & one first place vote).

Chadron State was picked ninth out of the 11 team conference.

UNK volleyball continues dominance over Chadron State

The 6th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball rolled Chadron State (25-9, 25-15, 25-19) Tuesday night to win their ninth straight match and 14 straight sets. The Lopers also continued an amazing 28 year win streak over the Eagles, beating Chadron for a third time this fall, UNK is 56-0 vs. the Eagles since late in the 1983 season.

Division II football, UNK and Wayne State suffer first conf. losses

11th-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo ThunderWolves scored 17 fourth quarter points and forced five turnovers to beat 4th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 27-14. CSU-Pueblo, which restarted its football program in 2008, improves to 7-0 (5-0 RMAC) while the Lopers (6-1, 4-1 RMAC) suffered their first lost of the season.

Chadron State reports possible NCAA violations

Chadron State College Officials announced today, that they have self reported concerns to the NCAA that violations may have occurred in the College’s athletic program.  According to Nebraska State College System (NSCS) Chancellor Stan Carpenter, President Janie Park and her administration are committed to participating and fully cooperating with the NCAA in a joint investigation regarding football fundraising activities and various financial transactions not part of the College Foundation. President Park has also notified Joel Smith, Commissioner of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
The law firm of Stinson Morrison Hecker has been retained to represent the College during the NCAA investigation.  Stinson Morrison Hecker will join efforts with the external auditing company, BKD, which is conducting a review of the financial transactions at issue.  Results of the BKD review will be shared with the Nebraska Attorney General, Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Auditor of Public Accounts, and the Accountability and Disclosure Commission. 
 
Chancellor Carpenter said, “I am confident that Chadron State will cooperate with the NCAA to identify violations that may have occurred and that the athletic programs will be able to move forward in a positive manner. Our primary focus will continue to be to provide quality academic and extra-curricular programs to benefit our students.”
 
President Park said, “Chadron’s athletic programs are important to our community and our students. As we move ahead, we remain committed to offering programs that produce strong scholar athletes.”
 
Given the sensitivity of this matter, neither the College nor the NSCS Office will have further comments at this time.

4th ranked Lopers battle Chadron State for 20-13 win

One of the top offenses in Division II football, 4th ranked Nebraska Kearney racked up 520 yards of offense, but they had to battle in state rival Chadron State as the Lopers came away with a 20-13 win.

In the third quarter, the Eagles picked off senior QB Jake Spitzlberger at the Kearney 26-yard line and, after several runs by tailback Glen Clinton, tacked on a TD to grab a 10-7 lead. Chadron then recovered a fumble at the Loper 39. Chadron got the ball inside the ten, but on a 2nd and goal play, Clinton lost control of the ball and OLB Jack Douglas pounced on it.

The UNK offense responded with a seven play, 94-yard drive that gave the Lopers the lead for good.
