Huskers go for season sweep tonight against Creighton

With a pair of wins over the Creighton Bluejays this season, the Nebraska baseball team (29-18, 9-9 Big Ten) looks to sweep the season series with the Jays on Tuesday night at TD Ameritrade Park when the two teams meet at 7 p.m. The last time the Huskers swept the Jays was during the 2008 season.

The Huskers are coming off a double-header loss to the Indiana Hoosiers, after beating IU, 13-2, in the series opener in Bloomington. Creighton was also on the road this past weekend and lost its opening game at Bradley, but then bounced back to take the series with wins in games two and three.

Nebraska is scheduled to start junior right-hander Tom Lemke on Tuesday night, while Creighton will through junior lefty Ty Blach, who also started the first two games of the season series this year.

Creighton to face Boise State in MVC-Mountain West Challenge

Boise State will come to Omaha for the first time when Creighton Men’s Basketball hosts the Broncos on Nov. 28 as part of the fourth annual Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge Series.  The agreement between the Mountain West and Missouri Valley conferences is in the final year of a four-year term. In each of the first two years, the Challenge featured head-to-head competition between nine Mountain West and nine Missouri Valley teams, while last year’s Challenge consisted of eight games.

The conferences split last year’s matchups, 4-4, but the Mountain West won the 2010 Challenge, 8-1, and holds a 16-10 lead in the first three years of the series. The MVC won the 2009 Challenge, 5-4.  Last season, the leagues combined for six NCAA tournament appearances, which included second-round wins by New Mexico and Creighton. Overall, the two conferences earned a collective 13 postseason berths and seven postseason victories in 2011-12.

Creighton’s hot bats cooled off by NU’s Hagemann

Creighton’s bats were silenced in the 3-0 loss at Nebraska on Wednesday night, as the Bluejays picked up just one hit off Husker starter Ashley Hagemann, who matched a career high with 14 strikeouts.

Lincoln native Becca Changstrom went the distance in the circle for the Jays. Changstrom struck out four batters, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits.  The bottom of the order came up big for NU. Senior Madison Drake finished 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs out of the No. 8 spot in the lineup, while freshman Jordan Bettiol went 1-for-3 with an RBI out of the No. 9 spot.

The win improves Nebraska to 25-14 overall, winners of 14 of its past 16 games, while the Bluejays drop to 20-16-1. The Huskers now lead the overall series 79-36, winning seven of the last 12 meetings between the two teams.

Keller leads Nebraska past Creighton

Nebraska sophomore pitcher Jon Keller threw a career-high eight-plus innings to lead the Nebraska baseball team (23-12, 5-4 Big Ten) to its third straight win on Tuesday night in a 5-3 final over the Creighton Bluejays. Keller improved to 4-1 on the year, as he gave up just two runs (one earned) on three hits, while striking out six.

Keller took the mound to start the ninth inning, but issued a leadoff walk to Nick Judkins and was pulled. The last complete game came from Tom Lemke in 2010. Travis Huber came in and gave up three straight hits, but bounced back with a strikeout and a game-ending double play to secure the Huskers’ 23rd win of the season.
