Alex Gordon wins AL Gold Glove

Alex Gordon, the former Husker star and Lincoln native, won one of three American League Gold Glove Awards handed out to outfielders. Gordon was the second overall pick in the 2005 baseball draft and his move to the outfielder was looked at as a last ditch effort to save his big league career.

Gordon played in just 49 games after missing most of the 2009 season with hip surgery and then played in just 74 in 2010. He was sent down to AAA Omaha where the former third baseman had to learn a new position while the organization prepared for the arrival of Mike Moustakas to take over the hot corner.

Gordon returned from the minors in 2011 and hit a career high .303 and set the franchise record with 20 assists.

Royals trade Greinke to Brewers (AUDIO)

2009 Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke has been traded by the Kansas City Royals to the Milwaukee Brewers. Royals GM Dayton Moore has been open to trade talks for the face of the franchise, if teams were able to meet his demands for a centerfielder, middle infielder and two prospects. It appears Milwaukee fits the bill.

Dayton Moore comments on Greinke trade

In the deal, the Royals are acquiring outfielder Lorenzo Cain, shortstop Alcides Escobar and pitching prospects Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Jeffress for the 27-year-old Greinke, who 10-14 with a 4.17 ERA in 2010 after winning the 2009 Cy Young. It is also possible that the Royals can send along infielder Yuniesky Bentancourt.

Greinke will not anchor a staff that hopes to contend with the Cardinals and Reds for the NL Central.

Royals finish season in third place, one game out

The baseball season is officially over for our pro teams in Nebraska. The Omaha Royals finished the season with back to back 9-1 wins at Oklahoma City. The Royals finished 81-63, one game behind Iowa and Memphis as the Redbirds won their division. Next season, the Royals move to their new ballpark in Sarpy County with a new team name, they’ll still be affiliated with the Kansas City Royals, but they are having fans help select a new team name.

Two Rockies, a Royal and former Royal make MLB All-Stars

On Sunday, major league baseball announced the rosters for the All-Star game. Royals’ closer Joakim Soria, the lone Royals representative, could be pitching to his former catcher John Buck in the late innings. The ex-Royals catcher, a career .239 hitter is batting .274 with 13 homers for Toronto. He was named as a reserve to the AL squad.  Soria has saved 23 of 25 games this season and has 40 strikeouts in 32.2 innings.

Ubaldo Jimenez, the Rockies starting pitcher, who is 14-1 has a good chance to start for the National League. In 100 starts, Jimenez is 45 and 29 for his career and has really come into his own this year.  His shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was named as a reserve.  He’s hitting .306 with just nine homers and 34 RBIs.

Kansas City gets All-Star game

Your best opportunity living here in Nebraska to see a major league All-Star game could come in 2012.

The Kansas City Royals have been awarded the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and will host the game at Kauffman Stadium, announced by Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig announced at a pre-game press conference held on-field Wednesday.

The 2012 Midsummer Classic will be the 83rd All-Star Game. It will be the third played in Kansas City and the first since July 24, 1973, which the National League won 7-1 at what was then known as Royals Stadium. That contest marked the 24th and final All-Star appearance by Hall of Famer Willie Mays. The other All-Star Game in Kansas City was played at Municipal Stadium on July 11, 1960, won 5-3 by the National League in the first of two All-Star Games played that year (also Yankee Stadium on July 13).
