Omaha’s Lerew heads up to Kansas City

The Kansas City Royals put right-handed pitcher Luke Hochevar on the 15-day Disabled List., retroactive to June 12, with a right elbow strain. The Royals selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Anthony Lerew from Triple-A Omaha. Lerew is the scheduled starting pitcher for tomorrow night’s game against the Astros. To make room for Lerew on the Major League 40-man roster, the Royals also requested Unconditional Release Waivers on left-handed pitcher John Parrish.

The 27-year old Lerew was 5-3 with a 2.84 ERA in 14 appearances, including 11 starts, for Omaha. He made three appearances (two starts) for the Royals last September, posting a 0-1 record with a 4.05 ERA. The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder is 0-3 with a 6.69 ERA in 14 career outings, including five starts, for the Braves (2005-07) and Royals (2009). He has yet to face Houston in his career.

Gordon sent to AAA Omaha

Lincoln native and former Nebraska Cornhusker Alex Gordon was sent down to the AAA Omaha by the Kansas City Royals as he continues what many will say is rehab from a broken thumb. The reality is the Royals may have run out of patience with Gordon.

Rockies get former Royals catcher

American League Cy Young winner Zack Greinke will be pitching to a new catcher in 2010. Miguel Olivo who caught 31 of Greinke’s 33 starts signed a contract with the Colorado Rockies. Olivo hit .249 with 23 homers and 65 RBI. He ranked third in the AL in catching base stealers.

Greinke top choice among MLB fans

Kansas City Royals pitcher Zack Greinke picked up his fifth major offseason award today, being named Starting Pitcher of the Year in the 2009 MLB.com This Year in Baseball Awards.  Greinke, the 2009 American League Cy Young winner, headlined a field of 10 starting pitchers from both leagues.

Royals’ Zack Greinke AL Cy Young winner

Zack Greinke, AL Cy Young winnerZack Greinke, is the AL Cy Young Award winner. Greinke went 16-8 this year for the Royals throwing 229.1 innings and making an All-Star appearance. Greinke walked just 51 with 242 strikeouts. Greinke beat out Roy Halladay of Toronto, CC Sabathia of New York, Felix Hernandez of Seattle and Justin Verlander of Detroit. Greinke grabbed 25 of the first place votes with Hernandez getting two and Verlander one.
