Husker basketball picks up another transfer

University of Nebraska basketball coach Tim Miles announced Tuesday that Terran Petteway  has transferred to the University of Nebraska and joined the Husker basketball program. Petteway, who hails from Galveston, Texas, spent the 2011-12 season at Texas Tech University and will have three years of eligibility beginning with the 2013-14 season.

“We are thrilled to add Terran to our program,” Nebraska Coach Tim Miles said. “He can be a very dynamic player for us. Nebraska second baseman Pat Kelly was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. Kelly hit .444 (8-for-18) last week in four starts with two home runs and 15 total bases. His two home runs came against Minnesota this past weekend, as the Huskers swept the Golden Gophers and moved from seventh in the Big Ten standings into a tie for fourth.

In the series opener on Friday night, Kelly hit a two-run homer that proved to be the eventual game winner in a 4-3 NU win. Kelly moved to the leadoff spot in game two of the series and was 4-for-5 at the plate. He broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning on Saturday with a solo home run for an 8-7. Kelly added a double on Sunday in the Huskers 6-5 win for his 15th extra-base hit of the season. In 18 at bats for the week, Kelly struck out just one time and is currently riding an 11-game hitting streak into Tuesday’s game with Wichita State.

Five conference champions for NU in track and field

Bjorn Barrefors provided the early highlights on Saturday as he won the 2012 Big Ten men’s decathlon title with a record-breaking 7,897 points, earning the first decathlon title of his career. The event took place in Madison, WI.  Barrefors broke the Nebraska school record of 7,707 points set by Rick Schwieger in 1992. He is the first Husker to win the decathlon since Aaron Henrichs claimed the Big 12 decathlon crown in 1998.

Senior Ashley Miller led the Huskers with two conference championships, one in the 800 meters and one in the 1,500 meters. With her event crowns, Miller is now a four-time conference champion at Nebraska.

Miles Ukaoma took home his first conference title with a personal-best time in the men’s 400 meter hurdles. Marusa Cernjul finished first in the women’s high jump with a personal-best mark of 6-0 (1.83). She recorded the jump on her second to last attempt, sealing the victory for Nebraska. She is the first Husker outdoor high jump champion since 2008.

Anna Weigandt took the triple jump title as she produced a jump of 42-6 1/4 (12.96) on her fourth attempt to secure her first conference crown.
