Former UNK CB gets NFL tryout with hometown team

Former University of Nebraska at Kearney cornerback Arthur Hobbs has received a tryout offer with the San Diego Chargers. Hobbs, a native of San Diego, will work out with the team Thursday.  Hobbs took part in San Diego State University’s pro day March 18, which gave him a chance to perform in front of numerous NFL teams. The Canadian Football League also has shown strong interest in Hobbs.

UNK’s Dlagnev is headed to the Olympics

Former Nebraska-Kearney wrestler Tervel Dlagnev qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Sunday night in Iowa City, IA by defeating Les Sigman, a former Nebraska-Omaha Maverick, in the finals of the men’s freestyle 120 kg/264.5 lbs. class.  Since leaving UNK, Dlagnev has done well in variou international tournaments and has already beaten some of the world’s best. He will enter the London Olympics in August with solid chance at a medal, even Gold.

An Arlington (Texas) High School graduate, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram featured Dlagnev this weekend.

UNK softball explodes for 27 runs in doubleheader sweep

Nebraska-Kearney third baseman Sarah Rome had seven RBI’s as the softball team scored 14 runs in one inning to sweep a double header from Black Hills State, 10-5 and 17-1 (5 innings), Sunday in Spearfish, S.D.

In game one, Rome hit a three-run homer to give the Lopers to a 3-0 lead in the first. The second game was a record setter for the Lopers as they scored 14 times in the first inning, sending 17 batters to the plate with eight hits, four walks, a hit batter and two BHSU errors. In that inning Rome hit a grand slam.

Nebraska baseball beats Nebraska-Kearney

Kale Kiser homered for the second game in a row and Chad Christensen and Austin Darby picked up two hits each as the Nebraska baseball beat visiting Nebraska-Kearney 4-1. Pitcher Ryan Hander picked up his second win of the season as NU improves to 8-4.

Hander went three innings of one hit baseball and one strikeout in relief of NU starter Dexter Spitsnogle, who gave up no runs on two hits over three innings in his first career start at NU. Freshmen Jeff Stovall and Aaron Bummer pitched the seventh and eighth innings for the Huskers, before Luke Bublitz picked up his first career save with a perfect ninth inning.

The Lopers scored their lone run in the top of the seventh starting with a two-out double from Chase Saxton.

The Huskers will host World Series qualifier Cal this weekend.

Chadron State-UNK to meet for third and final time in men’s hoops

The University of Nebraska-Kearney men’s basketball team will host Chadron State College in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout Tuesday in Kearney. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (Central time) 6 p.m. (Mountain Time). Tuesday’s game will be the 175th meeting between the two schools.

The Eagles defeated UNK 75-73 on Saturday to close their regular season with a 13-13 record. Both teams, along with Fort Lewis, ended the year with 13-9 league records. Thanks to a series of tiebreakers, UNK (15-11) got the four seed, Chadron (13-13) earned the fifth seed and FLC ended sixth.

The winner of Tuesday’s game advances to the RMAC Shootout in Pueblo on March 2-3 where it’ll play either top-seed Colorado School of Mines or eight-seed Western State.
