Lopers send eight wrestlers to nationals

The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team had two champions, a runner up and four third place finishers to win the 2012 RMAC Championships/Super Regional 4 Sunday in Hays, KS. This marks the 10th time in the last 13 years the Lopers have won this event. Next year, UNK moves into the MIAA for wrestling and will also compete in a new region.

Individually, Kearney qualified eight for the NCAA Division II Championships March 9-10 in Pueblo, Colo. To reach the NCAA’s, a wrestler must finish in the top four at his regional meet.  Click here for more on Loper wrestling.

Loper football signs 26 for 2012

Nebraska-Kearney head football coach Darrell Morris announced 26 high school seniors and one transfer who will play for the Lopers this fall. More will be added to the roster in the coming months.

17 Nebraska natives, six Coloradoans and one player each from California, Florida, Kansas and Nevada round out the class.

The group breaks down to eight offensive linemen, four defensive backs and four linebackers, three defensive ends and three quarterbacks, two athletes, a kicker, running back and wide receiver.

Loper baseball picked third in conference after Sweet 16 run

The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team has been picked third overall, and tied with New Mexico HIghlands for first in the Plains Division, in the 2012 RMAC Preseason Coaches poll. Coming off a NCAA Sweet 16 appearance, the Lopers (38-19, 27-11 RMAC) and the HU Cowboys each tallied 11 points in the Plains Division race. HU did receive four first place votes to the Lopers three.

Hot second half led UNK to big win over Chadron State

Sophomore Mike Dentlinger scored a game-high 18 points and the Nebraska-Kearney men’s basketball team shot close to 70% in the second half to pull away from Chadron State, 72-51.  UNK (7-5, 5-4 RMAC) stops a two-game losing streak while the Eagles (2-11, 2-7 RMAC) drop a 16th straight road contest, dating back to December 2010.

Neither team held more than a four point lead and each team made 10 field goals in the first half. UNK then came used a 12-3 run to lead 37-27 with 14:11 to go in the second half. During this stretch, Dentlinger (Millard North) scored five points, including his fifth three of the year.

UNK quarterback heading to Germany

Former Nebraska-Kearney quarterback Jake Spitzlberger is now a member of the professional Schwabisch Hall (Germany) Unicorns. After graduating from UNK in December with a degree in Industrial Distribution, and being a four-year starter for the Lopers, Spitzlberger will head to Europe in early March in preparation of the Unicorns season.

“I’m excited. I can’t wait. I’ve never been to Europe and I’m looking forward to it,” Spitzlberger told the Kearney Hub, who leaves for Germany on March 23. “I know they’re the Unicorns, so it should be a magical place.
