Husker softball sets attendance record in season finale

The Nebraska softball team finished third-place in the regular season Big Ten Conference standings with a 4-1 victory over Wisconsin in front of the third-largest crowd in school history on Saturday at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers unofficially set a new record for the World’s Largest Softball Tailgate on Saturday, drawing 1,752 fans to the event. Illinois held the record with 1,445 fans in attendance at its 2007 World’s Largest Softball Tailgate. Saturday’s Husker crowd was the third-largest in school history.

Nebraska ended the season with a 33-22 record, including a 15-1 record at Bowlin Stadium. The Huskers finished 14-9 in conference play, finishing third in the league standings. NU softball drops third straight at Indiana

The Nebraska softball team ended a tough weekend with a 4-2 loss at Indiana in the final game of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at the IU Softball Field. Despite out-hitting the Hoosiers all weekend, the Huskers never led in the series.

Nebraska fell behind in the first inning for the third straight game. IU jumped on top with a bloop double, a bunt single and a three-run homer gave the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead three batters into the bottom of the first off right-hander Ashley Hagemann (22-16) who took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in a complete-game effort. Hagemann added five strikeouts and walked only one.

The Huskers answered in the top of the second. Junior Gabby Banda led off with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI double from senior Ashley Guile. Then with two outs, Guile scored from third on a two-out, RBI single from classmate Madison Drake. Drake then stole second before senior Nikki Haget singled up the middle. Drake tried to score on the play but was thrown out. Indiana then added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a Husker error.

Nebraska wraps up its season next weekend with a three-game series against Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday at Bowlin Stadium.

UNO’s Elsasser wins pitcher award for fourth time

For the fourth time this season and second week in a row, Dana Elsasser has been named Great West Conference Pitcher of the Week. Elsasser shut out South Dakota 1-0 last Tuesday to improve to 13-7, then earned her second save of the season in 0.2 innings of relief in a 2-0 win over the Coyotes.

The sophomore from Hershey, Neb., allowed four hits and one walk over 7.2 innings and has given up just one earned run in her last seven starts. Elsasser has eight shutouts in her last 14 starts, including two in a row, and her 0.80 ERA is the top mark among all Division I pitchers. Her four weekly honors are the most this season among all Great West Conference players.

There was a great story in the Omaha World Herald about Elsasser’s rise from learning how to pitch to being at the top of her game.
