Edwards named Big Ten co-pitcher of the week

Nebraska sophomore right-handed pitcher Tatum Edwards won her second weekly award of the season when the Big Ten Conference announced she had been selected as its co-Pitcher of the Week.  Edwards made one appearance this weekend, tossing a five-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over Michigan State in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader. She added six strikeouts and walked only one, while throwing her first career shutout against a conference opponent.

Baker’s blast pushes Bluejays past Huskers

Amy Baker drove in a pair of runs, including a tie-breaking homer in the bottom of the sixth, to lead Creighton Softball to a 2-1 win over in-state rival Nebraska on Wednesday night.

The win was Creighton’s fifth straight and improved the Jays to 26-19-1 on the season. Nebraska, which won the first meeting 3-0 on April 11th, fell to 29-18 with the loss.

Creighton softball wins ahead of Nebraska matchup

Creighton scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 6-2 win over Drake on Tuesday afternoon. Creighton improves to 25-19-1 with the victory, and 14-6 in MVC play. The victory, coupled with a loss by Southern Illinois at Evansville, moves the Jays into a tie for second place with two weeks left in league play. Drake falls to 20-25 (11-10 MVC).

Creighton will host in-state rival Nebraska (29-17) at 6 pm on Wednesday, with gates to the CU Sports Complex opening at 5 pm.

Hagemann strikes out 17 in Huskers win over UNO

The Husker softball team pulled out a 1-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha in eight innings. NU’s Ashley Hagemann picked up her 19th victory of the season, going all eight innings with a season high 17 strikeouts. UNO’s Dana Elsasser pitched all eight innings as well, allowed seven hits and no walks and struck out three.

Nebraska’s Taylor Edwards hit an RBI single to left field to score Maddie Fowler from third in the top of the eighth inning, and NU’s Ashley Hagemann closed out the complete-game win in the bottom of eighth, striking out Katelyn Hinton with pinch runner Mollie Jones on first base after Lauren Larson’s single.

The Mavs fell to 19-14 on the season. UNO dropped the season series to the Huskers, 2-0, with both losses coming by a single run. Nebraska improved to 27-16 on the season.

NU softball drops finale at Iowa

After splitting a double header on Saturday, the Nebraska softball team let the series finale slip away, losing 6-4 on Sunday. NU rallied from down four, but two errors led to five unearned runs in the loss that dropped the Huskers record to 26-16 overall and 8-4 in conference play.  The Huskers did not have a hit through the first four innings, but strung together four hits in a four-run fourth inning to tie the game.

After tying the game 4-4, pitcher Taylor Edwards walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the fifth and then hit the next batter. Ashley Hagemann came on in relief and retired the side, but things went bad in the sixth. After retiring two of the first three hitters, a two-out error and a two-out, RBI single gave Iowa a 6-4 lead.
