NU volleyball edges other Big Ten school for Chicago standout

Nebraska volleyball picked up the first recruit for 2014 edging out Big Ten foes Minnesota and Illinois along with Texas, by getting a commitment from outside hitter Maddie Haggerty, a top 100 player for high school sophomores according to PrepVolleyball.com.  Haggerty is 6’1 and led Benet Academy to the Illinois Class 4A state championship. She will transfer to St. Francis High School in Wheaton, IL along with her younger sister Molly. Her older sister, Meghan, will be a freshman middle blocker at Wisconsin this season.

Two former Huskers named to U.S. volleyball roster

USA Volleyball announced that former Huskers Jordan Larson and Nancy Metcalf were named to the U.S. Women’s National Team Preliminary Roster for the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix.

The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team is ranked No. 1 in the world and will reduce the 25-player roster closer to the start of the event on June 8. The team has already qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Metcalf is a 2004 Olympian and a three-time AVCA First-Team All-American at Nebraska. Larson was a three-time All-American who led the Huskers to three NCAA Semifinals appearances.

NU volleyball wraps up spring with a win

The Nebraska volleyball team completed the 2012 spring season with an undefeated record after taking down the Iowa State Cyclones 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 27-25, 25-16) at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa on Saturday.

Nebraska was led by Hannah Werth as she totaled a double-double on the afternoon with 17 kills and 11 digs, along with a .371 hitting percentage. Gina Mancuso followed close behind with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .429. Lauren Cook tabbed a double-double of her own with 41 assists and 11 digs, as she helped the Huskers to a .276 hitting percentage for the match. Morgan Broekhuis made her presence known with 10 kills and five block assists, while Hayley Thramer recorded four blocks.

NU volleyball hosts Wichita State on Saturday

The Nebraska volleyball team will face the Wichita State Shockers for their only home match of the spring season on Saturday,at 5 p.m. at the NU Coliseum. It will be the Huskers third match of the spring, coming off a 3-0 win over North Dakota State in Norfolk last weekend.  Tickets for the match are currently on sale. Reserved tickets are $10 with GA tickets set at $8.

NU volleyball in Maui for exhibition matches this weekend

The Nebraska volleyball team missed it’s chance on getting to Hawaii last season, but now the Huskers made a trip to the islands for a four-match spring exhibition scheduled to begin tonight in Maui against Hawaii.

The Huskers are playing for the first time since a five-set loss at home in December to Kansas State in the second round of the NCAA tournament. That win sent the Wildcats to regional play in Honolulu instead of the top-seeded Huskers, who failed to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1993.

Friday’s match at the sold-out, 2,800-seat War Memorial Gym begins at 6 p.m. local time, which means first serve will come at 11 p.m. Friday in Nebraska. The Rainbow Wahine finished 31-2 last season and were ranked No. 5 in the final AVCA poll after losing in five sets to Southern Cal in the regional final.
