#1 Wayne State women escape with first round win

#1 seed Wayne State scored the final six points of the game to escape with a 78-74 win over Minnesota State Friday evening in the first round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional Women’s Basketball Tournament held at Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. WSC won its 44th straight game at Rice Auditorium and improved to 30-2 on the season with the win while Minnesota State finishes the season at 18-11.

Wayne State women are #1 in the nation

For the first time in school history, the Wayne State women’s basketball program is ranked #1 in the country.  The Wildcats moved to the top spot in the latest Top 25 Coaches’ Poll with 13 first-place votes and 666 points in voting conducted by various Division II head coaches from across the country.            

Wayne State is 29-2 on the season after winning the NSIC Women’s Basketball Tournament title on Sunday 62-59 over Augustana College.  The Wildcats were awarded the top seed and will host the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament at Rice Auditorium in Wayne beginning Friday, March 9th.  WSC will face Minnesota State in a first round contest Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.

Wayne State women to host NCAA regional play

Wayne State is the top seed and will host the 2012 NCAA Division II Central Regional Women’s Basketball Tournament March 9, 10 and 12. It marks the first time that Wayne State College has hosted a women’s basketball regional tournament. The Wildcats have qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament for the third straight season and fifth time in the last seven years after winning the NSIC Tournament title Sunday in a 62-59 win over Augustana College at Taylor Arena in Rochester, Minnesota.
Wayne State College earned the top seed with a 29-2 record and will face #8 seed Minnesota State (18-10) in a first round contest Friday. Game times for the eight-team regional will be announced on Monday. The Wildcats and Mavericks met three times this season with Wayne State winning all three contests – 78-60 in Wayne, 83-45 in Mankato and 58-35 Saturday in Rochester in the semi-finals of the NSIC Sanford Health Tournament.

Wayne State women hope to keep rolling at home (AUDIO)

The Wayne State College Wildcats women’s basketball team ended the regular season with a 26-2 record and a second consecutive Northern Sun Conference Regular Season championship. It has been a record breaking season for the Cats who are ranked 2nd in this week’s Division II top 25 Coaches poll, the highest ever ranking in the history of Wayne State college women’s basketball.

The numbers for the Cats this year are staggering. Ashley Arlen who scored a career high 38 points last Saturday moved into third in all time scoring with 1,615 points she also moved into second place all time in both free throws attempted and free throws made. She has done all that in just three years after transferring from Iowa State. Senior two guard Claire Duwelius earlier this year became the schools all time leader in made three point shots with 238 in her career and Senior point guard’s Ali Schwartzwald and Alisha Brown are now 4th and 5th all time in career assists. The Cats will be gunning for the 43Rd consecutive home win tonight when they host Northern State University of Aberdeen South Dakota. The Cats have not lost at Rice Auditorium in three years.
