A proposed casino at Carter Lake, Iowa just northeast of downtown Omaha has prompted a letter from Governor Heineman to the interior secretary. The Governor says you’ve gotta drive through Nebraska to get their, It’s part of Nebraska almost. He says Nebraskans have already spoken on Gambling, they don’t want it. He says we will get all of the challenges with it and he is really concerned.Governor Heineman tells us that Omaha would be charged with providing the necessary infrastructure for the Iowa casino that would be run by an American Indian tribe. He also says a casino will exacerbate the social ills associated with problem gambling. Nebraska doesn’t allow casino gambling, but Iowa does. The rub is that an American Indian tribe has received permission from the National Indian Gaming Commission to run a casino on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River.
