The November ballot may include an effort to keep the State Fair in Lincoln. A referendum petition has been filed reportedly by seven people from Omaha and Lincoln. It would do away with the new state law authorizing the move from Lincoln to Grand Island by 2010. Lincoln Chamber of Commerce President Wendy Birdsall tells us what that means for a University research park.
“It would certainly change the Landscape, it would change the strategy as to how we move forward, but i think we would fight very hard to make certain that innivation campus was a reality.”
Senator Phil Erdman of Bayard headed up the agriculture committee and reccomended the move to Grand Island.
“Well if that’s what the people want, that’s fine, the people also have to realize that if that happens, the fair is about 25-million dollars short of making the improvements needed at that site.”
The clock is ticking though. About 60,000 signatures are needed by July 16 to put the issue on the ballot.
