The ashtrays are officially put away at all Omaha keno outlets, stand alone bars and at Horseman’s Park. Omaha is now totally smoke free. If you are caught smoking in such an establishment, you could face a fine. Police will enforce the new law but they are asking bar owners and employees to monitor the situation and call if they need assistance. With the amount of bars and restaurants in Omaha, it is impossible to post a police officer in every establishment.
Omaha had originally banned smoking last year in all restaurants and bars that serve food. The only exceptions were at Horseman’s Park, keno outlets and stand alone bars. Bar owners took the issue to court wanting smoking banned in all establishments. The courts agreed that the ban was unconstitutional. A statewide smoking ban goes into effect in July of 2009.
