The first steps are being taken to build a national monument to the Pony Express in Sidney.
The Sidney Jaycees will kick off a Pony Express National Monument fundraiser with a special event next Wednesday. A groundbreaking ceremony will outline the history of the Pony Express, which includes a Sidney tie; Cabela’s founder’s Dick and Jim Cabela’s great grandfather was a Pony Express rider.
Also scheduled for the program: Pony Express riders will deliver plans for Sidney’s project, Mayor Wendall Gaston and other project officials will address the crowd, and dinner will be served to start the fundraising effort.
The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. on June 25th near the Gazebo at Cabela’s in Sidney.
The estimated cost of the monument is $75,000 and will be paid entirely through public donations and a local organization plans to announce a large contribution at the event.
The Jaycees hope to have the project complete by June 2010to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Pony Express.
