Federal immigration agents have wrapped up a five-day sting operation in several Nebraska cities.
Officials with U-S Immigration and Customs Enforcement say illegal immigrants were taken into custody in homes and businesses over the past week. A total of 44 suspects are in custody and they’re being held in county jails across Nebraska.
ICE officials took the most suspects into custody in Lexington, where 25 arrests were made. Another dozen were taken in Grand Island, with more in Broken Bow, Cozad, Gibbon, Hastings, Kearney and North Platte.
Of the 44 arrested, agents say 28 were fugitives, meaning they’d defied an immigration judge’s final order to leave the country. They were from Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.
