The man who headed the Nebraska State Historical Society for 24 years pleaded guilty to stealing $72,000 from the group. Tony Schmitz will be sentenced in September and could face anywhere from one to 20 years behind bars. The thefts occurred between September 2004 and 2007. Schmitz was arrested after irregularities were found by the state auditor’s office. They found more than 30 cases where records were not kept and evidence of mismanagement.
