An Omaha police officer was bit by a pit bull near 40th and Vinton Thursday evening. The officer was investigating a fireworks complaint when a pit bull being walked by a woman broke free and attacked the officer. The dog bit the officer’s forearm. He was able to shake the dog loose but then attacked again. That is when the officer pulled out is service weapon and shot the dog. The officer drove himself to a hospital where he was treated for puncture wounds to his arm. The dog was not properly licensed and did not have its vaccinations. This is the third pit bull attack in Omaha within the past two days. Wednesday afternoon, two women were bit and the same dog tore part of the scalp off of a toddler. Around the same time, several blocks away, another pit bull attacked an eight year old boy. He required stitches.
