It is estimated that 24-thousand Omaha Public Power District customers in Douglas and Sarpy counties are still without service from Friday’s massive wind and thunderstorm. Immediately after the storm hit, 126-thousand people were without power. Crews from NPPD, Loup Public Power District, Lincoln Electric System, Nebraska City Utilities, Kansas City Power and Light and L.E. Meyers, a private contractor, are all in the metro-Omaha area working to restore service. The biggest problem crews are experiencing is the tangle of wires in trees. It is very time consuming work. OPPD officials say this is the worst in the history of the utility in damage. It is estimated the storm took a 10-million dollar toll on the company. While progress continues, it is estimated that some customers will not have power until Saturday.
