One dark cloud has been removed from over the head of the Beatrice State Developmental Center. Health and Human Services Director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities John Wyvill announced that Nebraska has agreed to a settlement with the justice department addressing allegations of abuse and neglect at the state center in Beatrice.
HHS agreed to several measures to improve service at the center. In return, federal officials agreed not to prosecute the state or assess financial penalties.
The Beatrice State Developmental Center still faces potential funding problems. The brother of a former patient has filed a nearly two million dollars claim. The center is also facing the potential loss of nearly 30 million dollars in federal Medicaid funding for failing to meet care standards.
